Robin Williams on the Priesthood, or Why I Don't Understand the Whole PC Thing

I don't normally involve myself publicly with the news reports about celebrities. However, I would respectfully like to request that you boycott Robin Williams' movies.

We have quietly boycotted Samuel Adams beer and eBay at the monastery for the past few years.

Catholics used to be able to put significant pressures on movie studios and other businesses by collective action. While we live in more complex times than in the heyday of the League of Decency, surely the sorts of slander tossed out by Mr. Williams should not be taken by Catholics (or any Christians) lying down. Most revealing is Williams' admission that he won't make fun of some groups (Muslims?) because they will 'blow you up'. Not that I am advocating violence, but deterrents to bigoted behavior do exist, and if moral persuasion doesn't stick, then at the very least we can let someone else have our money than the movie studios and TV programs that permit naked bigotry.

Personally, I think Bill Donohue's rants do more damage to the Church's image than any joke a fading comedian might tell.

Robin Williams isn't funny anymore, and he tries to make up for it by being "outrageous." I think Donohue is just one of those angry guys who gets an adrenaline rush from righteous indignation.

Imprimatur
