Independence Day

I wish everyone a happy Fourth of July, and urge each of you to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for the freedoms that we enjoy. From time to time, I catch myself complaining about the treatment the Church receives in the media and feel a bit embarrassed about these complaints, seeing the real suffering being undergone by our brothers and sisters in Christ in so many corners of the world. Our nation is far from perfect, and we will have to answer for many things, but we are allowed to practice our faith here.

If I, who seem to be your right hand and am called Presbyter and seem to
preach the Word of God, If I do something against the discipline of the Church
and the Rule of the Gospel so that I become a scandal to you, The Church, then
may the whole Church, in unanimous resolve, cut me, its right hand, off, and
throw me away.
